Salt can be a noun, verb or an adjective. This word has many uses. Only a few are listed below.

Noun: 

  1. a white crystalline substance that gives seawater its characteristic taste and is used for seasoning or preserving food.
  2. any chemical compound formed from the reaction of an acid with a base, with all or part of the hydrogen of the acid replaced by a metal or other cation (positively charged ion).
  3. an experienced sailor. Example: He was one of many old salts who lined up to volunteer.

Adjective:

  1. treated with or tasting of salt. Example: salt water
  2. (of a plant) growing on the coast or in salt marshes. Example: The region is rich in salt plant communities and reed beds.

Verb [with object] :

  1. to season or preserve with salt. Example: After stuffing the fish, I salted and peppered it.
  2. to make (something) piquant or more interesting. Example: There was good talk to salt the occasion.
  3. to sprinkle (a road or path) with salt in order to melt snow or ice. Example: Local authorities worked to improve travel conditions by salting the roads.
