We can finally hang up our winter coats, but we now need our raincoats and rain hats. In the Northern Hemisphere, and specifically where we are in the northeastern part of the United States, we had a long, really cold winter. I’m ready for spring.
Off we go to the cellar to find some wise words. We haven’t picked from Silly Sayings for a while. Your turn. “Don’t rain on my parade.”
Well, that’s not exactly silly, but it’s a great thing to remember. It means don’t spoil my fun, don’t be negative, don’t ruin my chances of happiness or success. Stuff like that. A similar saying is don’t be a wet blanket. Seems like there’s always one of those in school. The kid who’s always negative or a party pooper. I wouldn’t hang with you if you acted like that.
Speaking of wet, I’m ready for spring weather, rain or shine, because I got a new bucket hat.
Fun things to do
Bucket hats and sheep
A bucket hat is a piece of headwear with a full, downward-sloping brim, typically made from cotton. The first bucket hat first appeared in early twentieth-century Ireland as a functional piece of headwear for outdoorsmen. Originally constructed from durable wool or tweed cloth, Irish farmers and fishermen favored the bucket hat because of the high lanolin content in the wool which made them water-resistant. It was called the “Irish country hat” and was easy to wash and store in a jacket pocket.
Lanolin is an integral part of most natural animal-derived wool as it’s needed to keep the fur coat from soaking up rain and sweat. Lanolin helps the fine fibers of the wool to transport away the liquid rather than retain it.
Bucket hats were worn by soldiers over the years and became fashionable once worn in movies and on TV. They are still popular today, because they protect the eyes and neck from the sun. They can also be rain hats. (from https://www.heddels.com/2018/07/history-bucket-hats/) July 9, 2018
