Rain

The word rain can be singular or plural and a noun or a verb.

Noun

Moisture condensed from the atmosphere that falls visibly in separate drops. Example: the rain had not stopped for days.

  • Plural—falls of rain. Example: the plants were washed away by unusually heavy rains.
  • Singular—a large or overwhelming quantity of things that fall or descend. Example: he fell under the rain of terror.

Verb

Rain falls. Example: it was beginning to rain.

  • literary (of the sky, the clouds, etc.) send down rain. Example: the low sky raining over the tall building
  • fall in large or overwhelming quantities. Example: bombs rained down
