Fall into fall fun

Girl in leaf pileWhether you call this season autumn or fall, it may be your favorite time of the year. It is for many of us. The summer is over, for many school has resumed, the weather is cooler (in the Northern Hemisphere), and everywhere there’s signs that change is happening all around.

Summer flowers turn brown or fade. As we saw in the video on the Zeller Cellar page in this blog, leaves on deciduous trees turn colors. Many stores are filled with winter squashes, like pumpkins. Both kids and adults carve pumpkins. Several holidays, starting with Halloween, mean more fun and great food. Pumpkin pie, pumpkin cookies and muffins are common. And then there’s all those apples to eat or cook. There’s nothing like biting into a good crisp, juicy apple on a fall day. How about some apple pie, apple cider, or apple sauce? And let’s not forget to add some cinnamon. Yum.

One of my favorite activities as a child was to jump into a huge bunch of raked leaves. Mountains of leaves lined the neighborhood streets in front of all the houses to be picked up at a later date by city employees. After kids played among the leaves, we smelled like fall.

  1. I love the video on deciduous and evergreen trees! Where I live, most of the trees are evergreens but we do have deciduous aspen and oak, that turn gold and brownish orange. I’d never see any trees turn red until I went back east and saw maple trees that were fiery red! I’ll never forget that.
