I know we keep going to the Famous Phrase box, but we find some great things there. I’ll pick this time.

“To go to bat for someone.”  How perfect is that, since it’s baseball season.

It means to take the side of, support, or defend someone. This term originated in baseball, where it means simply substituting for another batter, but it is the idea of helping one’s team in this way that has been transferred to more general use.
