Like many English language words, skin can be a noun or verb with different meanings. There are more meanings than listed here.

Noun:

1)  the thin layer of tissue forming the natural outer covering of the body of a person or animal: Example—I use body lotion to keep my skin soft | a flap of skin.

  • the skin of a dead animal with or without the fur, used as material for clothing or other items: Example—Is this real crocodile skin?
  • a container made from the skin of an animal such as a goat, used for holding liquids: a skin filled with water.

2)  the peel or outer layer of certain fruits or vegetables: potatoes roasted in their skins.

  • a thin layer forming on the surface of certain hot liquids, such as milk, as they cool: Example—Victoria was skimming the skin off the saucepan of milk.
  • the outermost layer of a structure such as a building or aircraft.

3)  (usually skins) informal (especially in jazz) a drum or drum head.

Verb:

 [with object] to remove the skin from (an animal or a fruit or vegetable): Example—She skins the chicken thighs before cooking them.

  • to scratch or scrape the skin off (a part of one’s body): Example—he scrambled down from the tree and skinned his knees.

1)  See how many of these skin words you know. If you get stuck, ask someone who might have the “skinny” on the answer.

Skinflint _____   Not important or sincere; fake

2) Musicians, take note!!

There’s an old song called, “I’ve Got You Under my Skin.”  It was written by Cole Porter and recorded by many singers. Your grandparent or great-grandparent possibly knows the first few lyrics. Ask them to sing it to you.
