The word sake has several meanings, but the one we use here is “for the benefit of or for the purpose or reason of.”
When we add the word keep to the word sake, we get a new word, keepsake.
keepsake (n.)
a small present, usually not expensive, that is given to you by someone so that you will remember that person
(From the Cambridge Dictionary)
Fun things to do
- Ask the adults you live with to show you their keepsakes. Ask them why those items are important to them and who gave those items to them. They may tell you stories you NEVER heard before.
- Write a poem or a song about keepsakes. You could use words that rhyme with sake, such as make, bake, rake, cake, fake, lake, take. I’m sure you can think of more and invent a great poem, song or story.
